Seeking Happiness

Have you ever sat and watched young kids play? If so, you’ve likely seen a stick become a magic wand, a tree warp into the world’s fastest pirate ship, or a small rock transform into an ingredient for a four-course meal. When kids play, the entire world is their prop and the possibilities run endless. It doesn’t matter where they are either – an open field, a stretch of sidewalk, or the school playground – it’s all part of their own special game. Somewhere along the path to adulthood it is easy to feel like we’ve lost the creative skillset of our younger days. We know well enough that the stick is simply a stick and a rock’s place is on the ground. We walk in the spaces designed for walking and live within the boundaries that have been drawn for us instead of creating them for ourselves. It’s a natural part of growing up and finding our place in the world but sometimes we can still benefit from that bit of childhood buried inside us. That’s why this photo, of sunbathers out on a waterside slab of rocks, is so refreshing. These aren’t young kids bending the world to fit their whims. They are adult women who haven’t left behind their ability to make something out of nothing. Perhaps it was one of those days in late spring where the sun is just warm enough to make summer come to mind and draw everyone fully out of winter hibernation. There isn’t enough time to travel to a truly beachside paradise from the middle of bustling Paris, so what is a person to do? The only reasonable answer is to gather a group of friends, stretch out on open space near the closest water’s edge and soak up the day! That’s the magic in letting our inner child out to play every once in a while. The ability to make something special from next to nothing comes rushing to the surface. We let ourselves see the world for what we want it to be, despite what it actually is, and for just a bit the world is once again our playground. If we can search within for that strand of our youth, we might just find ourselves having a lovely waterside day a hundred miles away from the nearest sandy shore.
