There is something joyful about this photo. Not the kind of temporary joy that comes from receiving a gift or winning a competition. It’s the sort of joy that comes from true contentment and lived positivity. It sits in the calm expression on the bicycle rider’s face, smooth and unstrained. The way his attention is turned to take in the world as he rides by, his pace one of moving with purpose but no rushed pressure. It displays from the inside of a man to the outside world. There are probably many easier jobs a person could have than selling and delivering goods in the city. The work certainly would be lighter with a car or even a cart to make the balancing act of bike riding simpler. Still, this worker seems to be embracing the situation they find themselves in as an opportunity for - not a hindrance to- personal success. This is a man who knows that life isn’t always perfect, easy, or exactly to our plan. He’s experienced hard things and come out on the other side. He also knows that this is the only life we get and you should give yourself permission to enjoy simple things such as passing a familiar face on the road, or having an outdoor job on a nice sunny day. The kind of man who when he pulls his bike out to make deliveries and the rain begins to fall, is able to remember that many days the weather has been perfect for his work and that it will be again soon. He might not love a soggy bike ride, but he is grateful for the opportunities that ride brings. It’s a life skill we all could benefit from. The ability to take up each opportunity as it presents itself with simple joy in the experience. It’s not about being over-the-top enthused with every minute of the day, that simply wouldn’t be realistic. But, if we can learn to embrace the cool breeze of a rainy day even when sunshine was in the forecast, or adapt to accomplish a task when our resources are limited, we can suddenly make the most of everything life offers and start to find the kind of contentment that shows from the inside straight on out.
